Carwow approached us to create a TV commercial to inform the public that they have essentially reinvented the wheel. Their digital product revolutionises the experience of car buying so car dealers compete for their customers’ business.

The new company's commercial had to reflect that innovation by ‘wow-ing’ their audience. To achieve this feat, we imagined a beautiful animated piece of film based on old-school zoetrope animation.

The scenes on the ad go round and round.

Working with Piranha Bar, we created a series of flat two-dimensional paper disks which were laser-cut to give us looping animated scenes. These were then affixed to the wheel of a car which drove the animation itself. Once it spun up to 25 frames per second — the optimum speed for the human eye to perceive perfectly fluid animation — it synced with the camera’s shutter speed and came to life in-camera.

With four scenes made up of 5 paper disks being used to tell the story of carwow, the animation had to be simple but it was the simplicity that makes for a feeling of a beautifully crafted commercial.
