Born in rebellion.

Founded in 2021 in Kinnitty, County Offaly, Pikeman Brewing produce a range of delicious craft beers including a Stout, Red Ale and Pale Ale.

Their beers commemorate three local Kinnitty men — Johnny Daly, Jimmy Scully and Tom Curley — who fought in the 1798 rising. Under the nose of the local British landlord, Thomas Bernard of Kinnitty Castle, they forged pikes as weapons for the Irish rebels. When their armoury was discovered, they were flogged for their defiance.

Pikeman Brewing’s beers celebrate the bravery of these men and the seeds of rebellion sown by all who stood in 1798. The bottles and cans of these iconic beers deserved a powerful and proud brand identity to reflect the strength and conviction of the three pikemen. I created one that truly celebrates these legends, combining bespoke typography, historically accurate illustration and period-correct print techniques.

As was the style of the time.

I wanted to create a brand with a bold lettering style akin to one that would have been widely used in 1798 and so I chose to create a bespoke blackletter logotype. I began sketching ideas and landed on the idea of embedding a pike into the monogram ‘P’ itself before moving on to creating the full logotype.

Starting with pen and paper, I then moved onto my digital tablet to refine the letterforms further before finalising the bespoke characters of the logotype as a tight, clean vector file. The monogram can be picked out to work on its own on the bottle caps and also as icons for use across social media channels.

Drawing from the past.

I wanted to place the three pikemen at the forefront of my designs and they sit proudly atop the main label on the beers themselves, each with their own personality just like the beers themselves. Each man is armed with a pike, just as they were in 1798 before their clandestine weapon manufacturing was discovered.

I worked with Steve Doogan to create three bespoke illustrations of the pikemen marching towards the viewer, taking the fight right to the oppressive English rulers. His three stunning scratchboard illustrations give each beer a unique, iconic look.

From Offaly to the World.

The story of the Kinnitty Pikemen is known well locally but not many people outside of Offaly would be familiar with their plight. Ian McCaffrey wanted to bring their story to the world and initially approached me to work on the label design for the bottles and the end frame of a commercial spot he had written and was producing.

Sláinte mhaith!

The richness and depth of the story saw us delve more deeply into the past to create something truly fitting for the brand, the pikemen and the torrid history they endured. Together, we created a brand that elevates these things to new heights.

The power of the screen.

Our brand mark forms the central inspiration for a new and bold brand identity system. Our underlying grids are created by lining up the four screens alongside one another to form what we call ‘The Storyline’, our own unique film strip. These are stacked to create our grids creating a unique framework for holding our content and messaging.
